Quick answer
This article walks you through the Work Zone and First Responder course one screen at a time, from signing in to confirming your completion.
The journey has five parts: sign in with WA.gov, verify your driver identity (first visit only), start the course, work through the lessons, and finish with the quiz and conclusion.
Plan on about 45-60 minutes. Your progress is saved as you go, so you can stop and pick up later.

What you’ll need
Before you start, have these ready:
- Your WA.gov username and password (or be ready to create them for free). See How to Log In if you don’t have an account yet.
- Your physical Washington driver license, for the one-time identity verification step.
- A supported browser on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. See Which browsers are supported? if you’re not sure.
- About an hour of uninterrupted time, though you can stop and resume whenever you need to.
Step 1: Sign in with WA.gov
The course uses WA.gov, the state of Washington’s single sign-on system, to sign you in.
- Go to the official course URL (https://washington-dol.mydrivingcourses.com) and click Sign in.
- Your browser opens the WA.gov Welcome page. Enter your phone, username, or email, then click Continue.
- On the next screen, enter the password for your WA.gov account and click Continue.
- If your account has multi-factor authentication turned on, enter the code when prompted.
Having trouble signing in?
If your WA.gov account itself isn’t working (e.g., you can’t reset your password) your best contact is WA.gov support.
Check the address bar
The real flow always sends you to a WA.gov sign-in page. Confirm the address bar shows that URL and a lock icon before you type your password. For more on sign-in problems, see How to Log In.
Step 2: Verify your driver identity (first visit only)
After WA.gov confirms your sign-in, the course needs to know which driver record to update when you finish. On your first visit only, you’ll see the driver identity verification screen.
- Make sure the Student tab is selected.
- Select your language
- Enter your last name exactly as printed on the front of your license.
- Enter your date of birth in MM/DD/YYYY format.
- Enter your Driver License Number in the format shown (WDLXXXXXXXXX), with no spaces or dashes.
- Click Log in.
This is a one-time step
Once verification succeeds, you won’t see this screen again on future visits. For full details and troubleshooting, see Verifying Your Driver Identity and Troubleshooting “Data Mismatch” Errors.
Call Driver Licensing Customer Service at (360) 902-3900 when the issue is your record — your name, DOB, or DLN itself.
Step 3: Start the course
Once you’re signed in and verified, you land on the course home page.
- You’ll see a greeting and your My Courses list with the Work Zone and First Responder course.
- The card shows a short description and the course length (about 60 minutes).
- Click Start to open the course.
Step 4: Move through a lesson
When you open the course, you’ll find the course lessons. You access a lesson by selecting its title. Inside a lesson, the player works the same way every time.
- Use the Next and Previous buttons to move through the slides.
- Select the menu icon to view all slides and return to any section.
- As you finish each slide, its lock icon is replaced with a checkmark.
Your progress is saved automatically
Progress is saved as you move through each lesson. When you revisit, the lesson starts from where you left off, so you can stop any time and come back later. See Can I pause the course and come back later?.
Step 5: Player settings you can use
A few controls below the player help you tailor the lesson to how you learn best:
- Replay — replay the current slide.
- Volume — make sure your sound is turned on and set the level.
- CC — turn captions on or off.
- Accessibility menu — view additional accessibility options.
- Full screen — select the full-screen icon to expand the lesson. Select it again or press Escape to exit full-screen mode.
Step 6: Move between lessons
There are separate buttons below the player for moving between lessons or back to the course page:
- Use the Course page button to return to the full list of lessons.
- Use the lesson navigation buttons to move to the next or previous lesson.
- As you complete each lesson, its Done checkmark is highlighted in green on the course page.
The quiz unlocks last
The quiz and conclusion become available only after all previous lessons are complete. If you don’t see it yet, go back and finish any lesson that isn’t marked Done.
Step 7: Take the quiz and conclusion
Once every lesson is complete, the quiz and conclusion become available.
- Work through the quiz and conclusion section the same way you did the lessons.
- When you reach the final slide, you’ll see a Congratulations message confirming you’ve completed the course.
- The screen tells you that a record of your completion will automatically be shared with the Department of Licensing.
- Click Submit & Exit to finish and close the course.

If I answer a question incorrectly
You can answer the question until you get the correct answer. See What happens if I answer a quiz question incorrectly?
Step 8: Confirm your completion
You can check that your completion was recorded at any time.
- From the top menu, open My courses.
- Select the Completed courses tab.
- The Work Zone and First Responder course appears showing 100% complete, the date you completed it, and your result.
What happens after completion?
Your completion is sent to the Department of Licensing automatically. For more on how this works, see How does DOL know I completed the course?. If it doesn’t appear right away, see Why is my completion delayed? and What should I do if my completion is missing?.
Tips for a smooth run
- Use a supported, up-to-date browser. Chrome, Safari, and Firefox all work well on a recent version. See Which browsers are supported?
- Keep cookies and JavaScript enabled for wa.gov and the course domain, or sign-in may loop.
- Stop and resume freely. Your progress saves as you go. See Can I pause the course and come back later?
- Sign out on shared devices. On a library, school, or family computer, sign out of the course and WA.gov before walking away.
