Quick answer
When you pass the knowledge check, the course platform automatically sends your completion to DOL’s DRIVES system. Your driver licensing record is updated within minutes — no printout, upload, or extra step is needed on your side.
You can see your completion under My Courses in the course, and on your DOL driver record.

What happens the moment you finish
As soon as you pass the knowledge check, the course platform connects directly to DOL’s licensing system and reports your completion. Here’s the sequence:
- You finish the last lesson and pass the knowledge check.
- The course platform marks the course Completed for you and time-stamps it.
- The platform sends a secure message to the DRIVES system at DOL — an “Update Course” call — telling DOL exactly which driver completed which course.
- DRIVES receives the message and writes the completion onto your driver licensing record.
- You see your status update under My Courses, and the same completion appears on your DOL record.
What you do need to do
This is one of the most common questions we get. Short version: there’s nothing to upload, print, or submit.
What happens automatically
- Your completion is sent directly to DOL when you pass the knowledge check.
- Your driver licensing record is updated by DOL — usually within minutes.
- The platform retries automatically if the first message doesn’t go through.
- A daily reconciliation report at DOL catches any record that fell through the cracks.
| What happens automatically | What you do NOT need to do |
|---|---|
| Your completion is sent directly to DOL when you pass the knowledge check. | Print or upload a certificate. The course does not issue one, and DOL does not need one. |
| Your driver licensing record is updated by DOL — usually within minutes. | Mail, fax, or hand-deliver proof of completion. The handoff is electronic. |
| The platform retries automatically if the first message doesn’t go through. | Click a “Submit to DOL” button. There isn’t one — it happens behind the scenes. |
| A daily reconciliation report at DOL catches any record that fell through the cracks. | Call DOL after every completion. Only contact them if your record still isn’t updated after an hour. |
Want a copy for your own records?
While DOL doesn’t need a printed certificate, you can take a screenshot of your completion screen or your My Courses page if you’d like one for yourself. It can also be handy if you ever need to contact support.
How to see your completion on your DOL record
Once the message reaches DRIVES, you can confirm the completion in two places:
In the course
- Sign in to the course.
- Open My Courses.
- Look for a green Completed badge on the Work Zone and First Responder course, along with the date and time you finished.
On your DOL driver record
- Sign in to your DOL driver portal. The Work Zone and First Responder completion will appear on your driver licensing record.
- If you’re at a DOL office or appointment, the staff member helping you can see the same record.

Behind the scenes: how the systems talk
The course platform and DRIVES communicate over a secure, audited connection — built specifically for this kind of state-system integration.
- The connection uses a private API just for this course. The course platform sends a small message containing the driver identifier, the course identifier, and the date and time of completion.
- All traffic is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.2 or higher, the same standard used for online banking.
- Every message and response is logged on both sides, so completions can be traced if there’s ever a question.
- If the first delivery doesn’t succeed (for example, during DRIVES maintenance), the platform automatically retries until DOL confirms receipt.
- A daily reconciliation report compares LMS and DRIVES records and flags anything that didn’t match, so DOL can correct it before it affects a driver.
Privacy note
Only the information DOL needs to update your record is shared — your driver identifier, the course code, and the time you finished. The course doesn’t send your name, address, or any other personal details with the completion message.
If your record doesn’t update
Most completions appear on the DOL record within a few minutes. If it’s been longer:
Less than an hour: this is usually a routine delay. See Why is my completion delayed?
More than an hour: treat it as a missing completion. See What should I do if my completion is missing?
