Quick answer
Yes. You can pause the course any time and come back later — on the same device or a different one. Your progress is saved automatically at the end of each module, so the work you’ve already done stays done.
The one exception is the final knowledge check, which is designed to be taken in a single sitting.

How progress saving works
The course is broken into short modules (usually around 5 to 10 minutes each). Each time you finish a module, you’ll see a green checkmark, and that lesson is locked in as complete. You don’t need to click Save or do anything else; saving is automatic.
| If you stop here… | …this is where you’ll pick up |
|---|---|
| At the end of a module (after the green checkmark appears) | You’ll pick up at the start of the next module. Everything before is locked in as complete. |
| In the middle of a lesson | You’ll pick up at the start of that module. You may need to rewatch part of the lesson, but no completed modules will be redone. |
| Right after a knowledge check question | Your progress on the knowledge check is reset for that attempt. Knowledge checks are designed to be completed in one sitting. |
| Your browser or device unexpectedly closes | Same as above, you pick up at the start of the module you were on, or the knowledge check restarts if that’s where you were. |
Why module boundaries?
Saving at the end of each module makes sure your progress is captured at natural stopping points and that you don’t have to retake whole sections you already understand. The platform balances flexibility (resume on any device) with making sure you didn’t skip anything important.
How to take a break
There’s no special “pause” button or “save and quit” you need to find. To take a break:
- Wait until the current module finishes and you see the green checkmark, if possible. That’s the cleanest stopping point.
- Close the browser tab or window.
- Your progress is already saved. There’s nothing else to do.

How to come back to the course
When you’re ready to keep going:
- Sign in to the course.
- Open My Courses. You’ll see the Work Zone and First Responder course marked In Progress, with a Resume button.
- Click Resume. You’ll pick up at the start of the next module after the last one you completed.
If you signed up on a friend’s or family member’s computer
Make sure you sign out completely. Each person’s progress is tied to their own WA.gov identity.
Switching devices when you return
Because your progress is saved to your account and not to your device, you can switch freely between devices. Common patterns we see:
- Starting on a laptop at home, finishing on a phone during a break.
- Starting on a tablet, finishing on a desktop computer.
See What devices can I use? for the list of supported devices.
The exception: the knowledge check
The end-of-course knowledge check is different from the lessons. Once you start it:
- Your answers are saved as you go, but the session itself is a single attempt.
- If you close the browser, leave the page, or your connection drops, the session may end. You can retake the knowledge check, but you’ll start a new attempt from scratch.
Plan a 10-minute uninterrupted window
Before you click Start knowledge check, make sure you have about 10 minutes where you won’t be interrupted. Plug your device in or check that your battery has plenty of charge, and use a stable internet connection.
If your session does end, see What happens if I fail the knowledge check? for what to expect next.
Other common questions
Is there a time limit to finish the whole course?
There’s no hard deadline built into the course itself. The only practical timing factor is your driver license appointment with DOL, your completion needs to be on file before that appointment. As long as you finish before then, you’re good.
Does my progress expire if I wait too long?
Your progress doesn’t expire under normal use. If you start the course and come back later, your saved progress will still be there when you sign in.
Will the course remember me on a new device?
Yes. Your progress is tied to your WA.gov sign-in, not to the device. The first time you open the course on a new device, sign in normally, your progress and saved completions will be waiting for you.
